Nonni Travel is a fully licensed travel bureau with main offices in Akureyri, founded in 1988 by Helena Dejak, who was born and raised in Slovenia but has lived in Iceland for the past 34 years.
Nonni Travel aims to encourage the travel of foreign and Icelandic visitors to the region and can assist other agencies with clients wishing to travel to Iceland, Faroe Islands and Greenland. The agency offers its own excursions as well as a carefully chosen selection of other tours and recreational pursuits. Special travel arrangements and a consultancy service for individuals or small groups is offered as well as arrangements for conferences in Akureyri.
Tours encompass the whole of Iceland and the programme has been expanded to include destinations in south-west and north-east Greenland lasting from three days to about three weeks. Outside the summer season in Greenland, Nonni Travel organises dog sledge trips during March, April and May a as well as kayak, boat, trekking and cruising expeditions in July and August.
Serving some 3,000 clients annually, Nonni Travel has built up a reputation for reliability and personal service. The bureau now has five employees. In Iceland, Nonni Travel employs professional guides fluent in English, French, German, Italian, Slovenian and the Scandinavian languages. Guides/hunters in Greenland speak Danish and English and, of course, Greenlandic.
After the demise of the Icelandic banks...
We have recently received several enquiries from clients abroad, wondering if they are taking an unacceptable risk by paying us in advance for our services.
Nonni Travel normally requires a 25% confirmation fee and later the remaining 75% advance payment 4-6 weeks before the journey. In case of cancellation by a client, these funds are reimbursed according to the Nonni Travel terms of payment and cancellations.
It is understandable that people abroad have doubts about busineses in Iceland, when the country’s three largest banks have recently folded. Nonni Travel did not lose any money during the subsequent turmoil and would be able to fund all its obligations for 2009 even without any new income. Our banks are now up and running again under the owership of the Icelandic state. In general, life is back to normal. The country’s infrastructure is sound and our airlines and businesses are functioning normally. In fact our greatest worry is the recession presently felt in almost every industrial country. On the bright side for visitors from abroad, the Icelandic krona has been devaluated making services in Iceland less expensive.
As a registered travel agent and tour operator, Nonni Travel’s financial health is closely monitored by the Icelandic Tourist Board, which receives our yearly Statement of Accounts and other information as necessary. This year marks Nonni Travel’s 20th anniversary. Doing business and entering contracts is always based on trust. Our little agency prides itself of having built a reputation of trust and reliability with both our clients and suppliers while rendering personal service with close attention to detail.
Why the name NONNI TRAVEL?
Helena Dejak says:
"Back in 1988 when I started the company I also had to find a name for it. Many names flew through my head and Nonni was one of them. I read a book by this author from Akureyri as a child. Jón Sveinsson (Nonni) had difficult childhood and came from a poor family. So did I. He promoted Iceland all over the world and was the best ambassador for Iceland in his time. I wanted to do that too and am still doing it."
So it is because of his him that the name Nonni Travel was chosen. 150 years have passed in year 2007 since his birth and we celbrate his life and his work.
