Upon arrival to Vágar airport transfer by airport shuttle bus to Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. Here you will stay the next four nights. You can use the afternoon for a sightseeing walk through the city:
Within short walking distance from the hotel there is the old Tinganes, crammed with red coloured wooden turf-roofed houses and the Tórshavn cathedral; on a hill beside the port there is the historic fortress Skansinn. The town is adorned with numerous outdoor sculptures.
Day 2 – Tuesday: Experience Northern Islands
We start from Tórshavn at 09:00 and head for the Northern Islands; the drive will take us over the islands of Streymoy and Eysturoy to the colourful village of Leirvík. Here we visit the Viking settlement – based on archeological excavations the town was first settled by Vikings in the 9th century. As we drive towards the islands largest town Klaksvik through the 6,2 km long tunnel we can enjoy the art of lighting designed by the famous Faroese artist Tróndur Paturson. In Klaksvik we visit the Christianskirken church and along our way we enjoy the views of the northern islands of Fugloy, Svíny, Borðoy and Kunoy.
We return to Tórshavn late afternoon.
Day 3 – Wednesday: Day trip to the bird island of Mykines
Mykines in the Faroe Islands is also known as the bird paradise due to the rich variety of birds. See at close hand the impressive gannets that only breed here and the charming puffins with the colourful beaks. You must cross a footbridge over the Atlantic Ocean to come out to Mykinesholm and the lighthouse built in 1909 situated in the most westerly point of the Faroe Islands.
Day 4 – Thursday: Panorama and Vestmanna bird cliffs
We start in the morning with a bus drive to the village of Vestmanna and board our boat. Sailing through narrow straits, deep grottoes and almost 700-metre high cliffs soaring up from the ocean is an incredible experience. The cliffs and caves provide safe nesting places for thousands of sea birds, such as puffins, fulmars, guillemots and razorbills. In the past and to some degree even today the locals would climb down the cliffs to collect bird eggs, which are considered a delicacy by the Faroese.
We return to Tórshavn at around 15:00/15:30.
Afternoon free to explore the town of Tórshavn, shop for high-quality woollen goods or enjoy a cup of coffee.
