Mortal danger if caving close to Eldvörp

Reykjanes peninsula

Yesterday gasses were measured near the volcanic cones and craters at Eldvörp on the Reykjanes peninsula. Gas levels are now monitored and weekly measurements are carried out as a part of the contingency plan implemented in response to unrest and uplift of ground around the MT. Thorbjörn.

Changes in gas levels have been detected. The Icelandic MET Office and the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management and strongly advice against visiting and exploring caves in the area. Yesterday’s measurements shoved deathly levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and lack of oxygen in a cave. Numerous caves are in the area, the cave in question is close to a parking lot that is a popular stop to embark on exploring the volcanic cones and craters.
