Last Saturday in August I decided to spend the day in a more adventurous way and do a little bit of cave exploration. The day started with an early morning drive from Akureyri to Lake Mývatn where I joined the group going to Lofthellir lava cave. After each of us got the necessary gear (studded boots and helmet with a headlight), we boarded the 4×4 truck that was going to take as on the 45-minute ride accross the rugged landscape of a lava field on the way towards Mt Hvannfell. After an exciting bumpy ride we reached the “parking” from where we continued on foot across a relatively easy terrain of a pahoehoe lava towards the Lofthellir cave. After a 20-minute hike we found ourselves at the gaping hole where we got suited and booted, decended down the metal steps and headed for the entrance to the cave.
After squeezing our bodies through the rather narrow first opening we reached the ice world of the caves – studded boots definitely were a great help walking across the icy floor. With ourheadlights providing the only light inside we were able to enjoy the amazing creations of nature where complete darkness rules most of the time.
