As Holuhraun eruption continues there is still only one way available to see this remarkable event – by a sightseeing flight! From Akureyri it only takes about 20 minutes to reach the eruptionsight. My colleague Caroline and I joined one of the flights this month, both agreeing that this was a fantastic experience.

Starting from Akureyri airport the Twin Otter aircraft took us over the amazing landscapes of mountains and valleys which partly covered in snow gave an impression of a painting.

As we reached the eruption site we spent about 20 minutes flight over the area, giving us a good view of the vast lava field which by mid-November has exceeded 70 sq.km. Gazing into the crater ofliquid magma was an unforgettable experience.
