Coronavirus recedes in Iceland!
Some excellent news this week!
We wanted to let you know that since 11th of May, for the fourth day in a row, there have been no new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Iceland. In the last eight days, only two cases have been verified. The number of active COVID-19 cases in the country is down to 18. A number that is encouraging changes for moving back to a normal life style!
Positive first steps were implemented on the 4th of May:
Since May 4 the Icelandic government has implemented substantial easing of social distancing measures. All children’s activities are back to normal, gatherings of up to 50 people are allowed, businesses that require close proximity with customers have resumed, and several other restrictions have been lifted.
The announcement of the reopening of Swimming pools around the country 🙂
The next step will be taken on May 18 when, for example, swimming pools will reopen. Those of you who know us Icelanders, know this is a huge step of happiness for us because this activity makes up for a large part of our daily culture and it’s not just a place for wellness and gym activity but also a big place for the social life of icelandic people where we love to meet friends and family to have some chats in a hot pot.
It has already been announced that further steps toward easing restriction will be taken on May 25. So stay tuned in the last week of May or the first week of June for some more news!
And what about foreign tourism?
In regards to travel, our Foreign Minister of Iceland, Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, reported in an interview that various ways of reopening Iceland to tourism are being discussed by members of the Icelandic government, officials and specialists in the health care sector. One of the options under discussion is whether traveling should be allowed on certain condition, of course with great emphasis on ensuring that there won’t be a setback in the fight against COVID-19.
