Itinerary
We pick you up from Akureyri and drive along the west coast of Eyjaford to the small but beautiful fishing village of Hjalteyri. To arrive at Hjalteyri is magnificent, its like stepping back in time at least 40 – 60 years. The old renovated houses welcome you, some of them more then 100 years old. The harbour with all the small fishing boats, peaceful ocean and the black sandy beach. An 80 year old herring meal factory made its mark on this small village, in this “castle” is the working place and a gallery of the remarkable handcraft woman Lene.
We meet a local handcraft woman who uses traditional methods to make all kinds of products out of animal skin and furs. None of the produce she uses has come from fur farms, all animals have died due to natural causes and nothing goes to waste. You will get a tour of her studio and gallery. Learn about the traditional techniques used to clean and dry skins as well as how she makes rugs, bowls, jewelry and more. Her studio is really a cavern of wonders. We taste some local refreshments before heading to the microbrewery of Kaldi beer, for beer tasting. Kaldi brewery is a family owned microbrewery founded 2006. Here you will learn about the process of making beer. Get to see the dry ingredients and bottling factory. And of course taste some of the many varieties of beer. Kaldi beer tastes magnificent and is one of the number one sold beers in Iceland.
