Itinerary
Vatnshellir lava cave is on of the most easily accessible lava caves in Iceland. You do need to be reasonably fit, as you will walk in dark cave on uneven lava floor and up and down spiral staircases inside the cave.
The cave was created nearly 8000 years ago when a nearby crater erupted. This 45 minute guided tour will tell you how the cave was created in a fun and educational way, explaining the local geology.
